On Tuesday August 7th the groundbreaking rail mapping project developed by the University of Louisville and Citizens for Rail Safety will be unveiled at the National Conference of State Legislators. The project utilizes state of the art Google Mapping technology to track and view the most dangerous rail crossings in America.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, a train strikes a vehicle or a pedestrian at a rail crossing approximately every 2 hours in the United States. These 12 daily accidents have the potential of producing catastrophic injuries and deaths.
Based on these statistics, as of January 1, 2008, there have been 1584 train strikes of a vehicle or pedestrian.

Citizens for Rail Safety is a national, non-profit public interest group dedicated to improving rail safety throughout the United States. We are actively engaged in providing proprietary academic research regarding a broad spectrum of freight and passenger rail issues. We constantly monitor and report railroad accidents as well as provide recommendations from safety experts on the course of action the railroads can undertake to make their industry safer. We are "the source" of information on all aspects of rail safety for the public, business, government and the legal profession.
Today, there are fewer than 2,300 railway police officers in North America.
